NOVA RPCV Vice President, Kate Pongonis, introduces the speakers.RPCVs and Speakers gathered together at the August 25, 2024 Potluck.

On August 25, 2024, NOVA RPCA hosted its quarterly potluck and gathering with a theme of Refugees: Volunteer Opportunities to Assist “New Neighbors” Resettling in Our Community.

Our invited guests were representatives of the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM); two local resettlement agencies- REACT D.C. and Lutheran Social Services – and a member of the Peace Corps affiliate group Peace Corps Community for Refugees.

The PRM representatives spoke about the Welcome Corps, a State Department-sponsored program that enables private citizen groups to sponsor new refugees in our communities. PRM also presented to the National Peace Corps Association, on August 28th, to encourage more RPCVs to consider forming groups to sponsor refugees from their countries of service or with language affinity.

PRM also introduced two of its partner resettlement agencies which support “new neighbors” arriving in our communities. They shared a number of ways in which RPCVs may become involved in helping newly-arrived individuals. Contact information and links to program information are provided below.
