Remember village life? Carrying a bucket of water on your head? Life in a mud hut! I do!
Book Talk & Potluck with RPCV Mike Tidwell – Sunday, November 9th at 5pm
Please join us and RPCV/Zaire Mike Tidwell to discuss the two years Mike spent in the grasslands of south-central Zaire trying to teach the benefits of fish farming in some of the poorest villages on the continent. Mike’s hilarious and heart wrenching memoir “The Ponds of Kalambayi: A Peace Corps Memoir” provides a beautiful, thoughtful glimpse into life in the Peace Corps.
Mike will also discuss “The Lost Trees of Willow Avenue: A Story of Climate and Hope on One American Street” — a riveting and elegant story of climate change on one city street, full of surprises and true stories of human struggle and dying local trees – all against the national backdrop of 2023’s record heat domes and raging wildfires and hurricanes. An author and filmmaker, Mike has been featured in numerous media outlets including NBC’s Meet the Press, NPR, the New York Times and the Washington Post and is the founder of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network, a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness about global warming in Maryland, Virginia, and DC.
Books will be available for purchase and signing. Please bring a main dish, side or dessert and a beverage to share. Please consider wearing clothes from your Peace Corps country of service.
Come join us for a lovely gathering to celebrate our cross-cultural differences and hear uplifting stories of human struggle!
